BEAGLE ENGAGES UNPLUGGED VACUUM IN MULTI-HOUR STANDOFF, NEITHER SIDE BLINKS

The vacuum, which was off, switched off, and had been off for two days, was described by the dog as 'still a threat.'

A tense confrontation entered its fourth hour Sunday afternoon in a Snoutwood living room, where a beagle named Copper has positioned himself six feet from an unplugged vacuum cleaner and refuses to look away.

The vacuum, according to household records, was last used on Friday, has been switched off since, and is at present leaning inert against a closet door. Copper considers it "active, dangerous, and watching him," sources close to the standoff report.

"It's not even plugged in," said a spokesperson for the household. "The cord is wrapped up. It cannot do anything. He knows what it does when it's on, and he has decided that off is just a trick."

Copper's strategy has consisted of maintaining a fixed defensive distance, emitting a low continuous growl, and barking sharply whenever anyone walks near the appliance, "to warn us," the spokesperson explained. Attempts to demonstrate the vacuum's harmlessness by patting it were met with what witnesses described as "a betrayed look and a full retreat behind the sofa."

The dog broke position only twice: once for a snack, which he ate while still facing the vacuum, and once to bark at a different, smaller vacuum in the hall closet that he had apparently only just remembered existed.

Behavioral officials note the standoff is unlikely to resolve on its own. "As long as the vacuum exists, this continues," one observer said. "You can't win. You can put it away, but he knows it's in there now. He can feel it."

By evening, the human residents had surrendered and relocated the vacuum to the garage. Copper followed the door with his eyes, then took up a new post facing the garage entrance, "in case it comes back."

The vacuum has not commented. It cannot. It is a vacuum.
