NATION'S GOLDEN RETRIEVER STILL DOES NOT UNDERSTAND STAIRS, EXPERTS BAFFLED

Subject has used the same staircase daily for four years and continues to approach it like a new and hostile invention.

The Daily Zoomies · June 25, 2026

Four years into a lease he shares with the same staircase, a golden retriever named Waffles continues to regard the seven steps in his home as an unsolved and deeply personal problem, sources confirmed this week.

The staircase, which has not changed in any way since Waffles moved in as a puppy, is used by every other member of the household without incident. Waffles alone treats it as a fresh challenge each morning, pausing at the top, looking down, and appearing to recalculate the entire concept from scratch.

"He knows it's there," said a spokesperson for the household. "He's seen it thousands of times. Every single day he acts like it just appeared. He looks at the stairs. He looks at me. He looks at the stairs. Then he does the thing."

The thing, witnesses say, involves Waffles descending the first three steps at a normal pace before abruptly losing confidence, converting to what one family member called "a controlled avalanche," and arriving at the bottom in a heap. He then stands, shakes, and looks around as though genuinely surprised to have survived.

Going up, officials report, presents the opposite crisis. Waffles takes the upward stairs at a full sprint, "like something is chasing him, but nothing ever is," and collides with the landing at speed.

Canine cognition specialists remain unable to explain the phenomenon. "The dog is not unintelligent," one noted. "He can open the pantry. He knows the word 'walk' from three rooms away. He simply refuses to accept the stairs. We think he believes they are new every time."

Attempts to walk him through the process slowly have been unsuccessful. "You can't reason with it," the spokesperson said. "He waits for you at the bottom looking proud, like he beat them. He did not beat them. He never beats them."

At press time Waffles was standing at the top of the stairs, once again, considering his options.
