GERBIL 'KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS DOING,' SAY WITNESSES TO OVERNIGHT CAGE ESCAPE
Suspect returned to the cage voluntarily by morning, offering no explanation and, officials say, 'looking pleased.'
A household gerbil named Nugget staged a clean overnight escape from a securely latched cage in Gerbilton this week, spent several unaccounted-for hours at large, and returned to the cage on his own before dawn, in an incident witnesses insist was "completely premeditated."
The cage door was found ajar Wednesday morning, its latch disengaged in a manner the household describes as "impossible for a creature that small and that round." Nugget was not inside. A search of the room turned up chewed cardboard, a relocated sunflower seed, and no gerbil.
"He planned this," said a spokesperson for the household, examining the empty cage. "You don't get that latch open by accident. He'd been working on it. He'd been studying it. We just didn't take him seriously."
The gerbil remained unaccounted for through the early morning hours. Sources say faint rustling was heard from "at least three different walls," suggesting a route no one has been able to reconstruct. Then, at approximately 6 A.M., a family member found Nugget sitting calmly back inside his cage, "like nothing had happened, like he'd just stepped out for air."
Officials note the latch was, by that point, re-closed. How this was accomplished remains unexplained.
"He looked pleased with himself," the spokesperson said. "That's the part that gets me. He didn't run away. He came back. He wanted us to know he could leave whenever he wants. This was a message."
The household has since added a second latch, a small clip, and what one member called "a level of supervision that is honestly excessive for a gerbil." Nugget has shown no further interest in escaping, which officials describe as "the most suspicious development yet."
"He's waiting," the spokesperson said. "He's letting us relax. He knew exactly what he was doing the whole time."
This is a developing situation.
